Increasingly,
people are losing faith in the political leaders of our world. They doubt the
legitimacy of business enterprises and even the honesty of those who are
assumed to be objective presenters of the facts. While a new rage of
frustration is spreading, we are fast approaching the beginning of a new
renaissance. As one of the world's most important industries, we have a
fundamental role to play. But first we must be convinced that we are part of
the solution. How will we formulate our offer to the world and realize the very
vision and dreams that our industry was founded upon?

The
world of Travel & Tourism does not operate in isolation. Not only does it
have a huge impact on many other sectors of the economy; it is also affected by
trends in economic, political and social developments worldwide. In this
session, well-known commentators will present the trends that are shaping the
future and the impact they will have - on the global economy and political
environment, as well as on consumer lifestyles and aspirations.

There
is a plethora of forecasts suggesting that 2004 will show a return to growth
for the
US
and other major economies, boding well for Travel & Tourism and its much
needed recovery from 9/11, Iraq War, SARS, terrorism and poor economics. This
session, will attempt to separate the reality from the hype and determine if
there is sustainable fuel for this growth or simply wishful thinking.

Mission Impossible? The unprecedented challenges faced by Travel & Tourism
organizations over the past few years have led to a new style of
decision-making in board rooms, business management and global communications.
These behaviours are wiping out the risk averse and putting forward 'real
entrepreneurs'. What are the factors defining the competitive edge of these new
leaders? And how will they shape the future of Travel & Tourism across the
world?

The
pressure on business leaders in the Travel & Tourism industry has resulted
in a new business philosophy. In today's marketplace, competition is fiercer
and less predictable than ever before, and the customer is increasingly
demanding. How will industry leaders define their new strategies for the
changing environment? How will they differentiate their products and services?
How will they persuade their customers, shareholders and employees to adhere to
this new philosophy?

WTTC
works with specific regions or countries in two different ways:
- By setting up a WTTC Regional Initiative. This is appropriate in
countires where the private sector of Travel & Tourism is not
represented. WTTC may therefore launch an initiative that brings together
key players from every sector of the industry to speak with one voice.
The India Initiative, which was set up in February 2000, is an example of
this. This Initiative strives to raise awareness of the economic and job
creating importance of the industry and to remove barriers to growth.
Join the leaders of the industry from
India
to discover the challenges and achievements of the past five years.
- By partnering existing Initiatives that have similar goals to WTTC.
This is appropriate in regions where initiatives already exist but where an
alliance with WTTC allows both bodies to strengthen their message and benefit
from networking, sharing experience, economic data and reseaerch. The
partnership between WTTC and Exceltur (The Spanish Alliance for Tourism
Excellence in
Spain
) is a good example of this.
Join the leaders of the industry from
Spain
to hear the opinions of the public and private sectors on tourism in
Spain
and to discuss the impact of the 11/3
Madrid
attacks on the Spanish tourism industry.

The
benefits to governments of stimulating Travel & Tourism would seem to be
self-evident. Economic growth, employment creation and increased export
revenues are among the most evident. Indeed, in many countries Travel
& Tourism is the leading sector driving the economy. So why, despite
the obvious, is the industry rarely given the status it deserves at the most
senior levels of government with direct access to the top? How can
governments implement a long-term strategy which promostes the successful
growth of Travel & Tourism while ensuring preservation of the social,
cultural and natural environment?

People
say they want to see the world, but many express dismay about the experience of
simply getting to their destination. For several years now, industry leaders
have been talking about "seamless travel experiences" and "improving the entire
customer experience". As the typical tourist is becoming increasingly
sophisticated and demanding, what will the key consumer trends of the future
be? Which destinations will they choose and why? How will they get there and
how can the industry provide a seamless travel experience?

Travel
& Tourism GDP is forecast to grow by over 30 per cent in
China
in 2004, helping to erase almost completely the negative impact of SARS. Little
wonder that the Travel & Tourism industry from all over the world is
competing for a piece of the golden cake. And
China
is by no means the only source market or destination seen as a land of
limitless opportunity. Which origin markets will provide the best growth
potential, which new destinations are expected to emerge, and what kinds of new
and exciting products and experiences will customers be seeking?
